Your daily spendings in Southeast Asia depends on where you travel and how you travel ​ Factors that increase or decrease costs: • Countries you visit (Vietnam & Cambodia are cheaper than Thailand or Indonesia for example) ​ • Travel speed (slow travel = cheaper per day as not rushing to cram in all activities and places in a short amount of time) ​ • Accommodation choice (dorms vs private rooms) ​ • Western food vs local food (If you eat western food daily, you can expect to spend easily over 3x the amount on food) ​ • Drinking & nightlife (If you drink every night - you will have to add alcohol into your budget (you do not need much to have a fun drunken night!) ​ • Flying instead of buses or trains (If you don't like the look of overnight busses and chose to catch a flight, expenses will shoot up) ​ • Staying in major tourist hotspots ​ These prices are realistic averages — not minimum survival budgets.

A rough monthly budget for most travellers looks like this: • Budget travel: £700–£1,000 • Mid-range travel: £1,000–£1,500 • Comfortable travel: £1,500–£2,000+ • This includes accommodation, food, transport, and activities. *International flights, visas, and travel insurance are not included.

Costs vary noticeably across the region - and prices can change a lot depending on whether you’re in big cities, islands, or smaller towns. Cheapest (generally): • Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Myanmar (where travel is possible/safe) • East Timor / Timor-Leste can be surprisingly expensive for what you get, so I wouldn’t label it cheap but still cheaper to travel than other countries.
