Most travellers use platforms like Hostelworld or Booking.com to find hostels. Look for places with lots of recent reviews, a social atmosphere, and a good location rather than the cheapest price. You can book a few nights to start and decide the rest as you go.
Southeast Asia is one of the easiest regions in the world for first-timers. It’s affordable, well-connected, and full of other travellers - making it easy to get around and meet people, even if you’re travelling alone.
In most countries, it’s easiest and cheapest to buy a local SIM card on arrival at the airport or in town. Data is affordable and coverage is generally good. For short trips or convenience, eSIMs are also an option.
Local currency is almost always best. Cash is widely used, especially for food, transport and small shops. ATMs are common, and cards are accepted in larger cities - but always carry some cash as backup.
For most backpacking trips, you only need to book your first few nights and your arrival flight. Accommodation, transport and activities can usually be booked as you go - which keeps plans flexible and stress-free.
